Kate grew up in working-class neighborhoods in San Francisco as the eldest of six children. She worked throughout high school and college, earning a bachelor’s degree and law degree at the University of California, Berkeley, with the help of scholarships, Pell Grants, and student loans. After serving with distinction at the Department of Justice, Kate was recruited by then Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa to come to Nevada to set up a state antitrust office as Senior Deputy Attorney General. Kate was elected Nevada’s State Treasurer in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. As Treasurer, she got rid of no-bid contracts and off-the-book accounts, and reduced spending, making government more efficient and identifying innovative methods to increase economic development for businesses in Nevada. Kate and her husband, Elliott Parker, reside in Reno, Nevada, where she is a board member of the United Way of Northern Nevada and Elliott is an economics professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. To build more resiliency in the state’s economy we must ensure that small businesses don’t only open but thrive. Having been a small business owner, Kate understands the barriers entrepreneurs and small businesses face when it comes to interacting with government agencies. Kate will make sure the Lieutenant Governor’s office works to help small business owners navigate state bureaucracy and that Nevada’s small business community is highlighted for all its accomplishments. Workforce Development To meet the workforce demands of Nevada’s growing economy, we need to partner with organizations that already provide career and technical education to potential employees. Modern apprenticeship type programs can help our children gain transferable skills and create a pipeline of talent between our schools and our businesses. Kate will work with industry leaders and education professionals to ensure programs support in-demand jobs and that all students have an opportunity to a good-paying career. Education As the first in her family to go to college, Kate understands the value of a good education. That’s why she created the College Kick Start Program to open and fund college savings accounts for every kindergartner in public school in Nevada as State Treasurer. Nevada’s per pupil spending in public schools has consistently ranked among the lowest in the country. Kate will work to ensure that the money Nevadans have voted to go to educations is allocated to our schools, to our children, and thus to a better tomorrow for Nevada. Executive Governor Lt.
